CAHI/Zogby Poll Reveals Americans Willing to Cross State Lines for Access to Affordable Health Insurance

ALEXANDRIA, Va., Sept. 24

This Thursday, the Council for Affordable Health Insurance (CAHI) will hold a press conference and unveil the results of a new Zogby International poll which reveals that Americans strongly support the idea of allowing people to cross state lines to find cheaper health insurance coverage.

President Bush has proposed allowing Americans living in one state to purchase health insurance currently available to those living in another state, and Rep. John Shadegg (R-Ariz.) has introduced such legislation.

"Every state imposes mandates and restrictions on health insurance that drives up the price of policies and therefore increases the number of uninsured," stated CAHI Director Dr. Merrill Matthews. "If you want to know why health insurance is so expensive, begin by looking at what some of the most egregious states are doing." For example, individuals in New Jersey and New York who buy their own health insurance pay about $4,000 a year for the same coverage that people in Pennsylvania get for $1,500 and Iowa for $1,200, according to a survey by eHealthInsurance.com. Family coverage is even more expensive.

"States can lower the cost of health insurance and reduce the number of uninsured by giving their citizens access to a wide range of affordable health policies without all the mandates and restrictions," Matthews concluded. "If they refuse, then Congress needs to take action to ensure that all Americans have other options. Judging by the results of this poll, Congress has the support to do just that."

The press conference will be held Thursday, Sept. 30 at the U.S. Capitol in room HC-7 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. If you wish to attend or for more information, please contact CAHI Communications Director V. Tom Gardner at 703-836-6200 ext. 386 or tgardner(At)cahi.org.
